| Waldhauser is state's second best |
| BAKERSFIELD - Vince Waldhauser’s triumphant run through wrestling’s postseason came to a screeching halt just 30 seconds into the championship round of the CIF State Wrestling Championship Saturday night at Bakersfield’s Rabobank Arena. Competing in the 160-pound division, the Oak Ridge High junior hadn’t given up a single point through three weeks of qualifying and two days of rugged competition in one of the nation’s toughest prep meets. Waldhauser’s opponent was the state’s No. 1 ranked wrestler and a favorite of the hometown fans, junior Bryce Hammond of Bakersfield who took fourth last year at 152-pounds and won the NHSCA High School Nationals. Waldhauser was seventh in 2009 in the 145-pound bracket and fourth in the national meet and an all-American. In his customary aggressive style, Waldhauser shot in first for a double-leg, the two scrambled and Hammond won the takedown before the match was stopped as Waldhauser grabbed his leg in extreme pain. “He (Hammond) pulled Vince straight back and I heard something pop,” Trojan coach Casey Rhyan said. “I thought he’d broken his ankle. Vince never shows pain and he was obviously in a lot of pain.” With just 20 seconds left in the allotted injury period and Waldhauser pleading to continue, Rhyan had an agonizing decision. “I’ve never had to face that situation,’ Rhyan said. “He wanted to go on but I didn’t want to take a chance if it was broken.” Waldhauser convinced Rhyan and the medical staff he could wrestle and hobbled back to the center of the mat for the restart. Unable to stand up and put pressure on his ankle, Waldhauser fought on, nearly scoring in the third when he briefly turned Hammond to his back - not long enough to earn points but showing the crowd he wasn’t throwing in the towel, prompting a California Wrestler writer to describe him as “dangerous.” Waldhauser gave Hammond a fight but the Bakersfield Driller, who was also battling injuries including a popped rib and a dislocated elbow from earlier matches, scored two reversals in the last two periods to win the title 6-0. Waldhauser is the second Trojan wrestler in three years to take home silver. Kyle West was second in 2008. “It was obvious he couldn’t put any pressure on the ankle,” Rhyan said as Waldhauser was examined after the bout and an ice pack was taped to his ankle. “It’s like wrestling without your legs. He’ll be all right, this will make him tougher.” Refusing any help, Waldhauser climbed the stairs to the concourse level where his teammates and parents anxiously awaited. “You guys now how I am, I never feel pain,” he said. “But I did out there. I don’t know what happened. Hammond didn’t do anything, I was just in a weird position and I heard it pop but I didn’ t want to quit. I’m fine.” Waldhauser lost just two matches all season. He roared through the playoffs, winning the Sierra Valley Conference title and a Division-II championship and the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters championship without giving up a single point. He dominated all comers in the state meet, pinning Hoover’s Mago Ramos in his first match in a little over a minute and earning a second-period fall over Bon Borges of El Molino. Another first- period pin of Bellarmine’s Jeremy Mitchell set up his two toughest matches as his goal of winning a state title was in sight. In his last match Friday, Waldhauser faced Lemoore’s Jacob Pendleton, a wrestler who had just defeated Anderson’s Marcus Zachary who beat Waldhauser in the Tim Brown finals. Forty eight seconds after the bout started, Pendleton was on his back and Waldhauser was in Saturday’s quarterfinals with Selma’s Justin Lozano waiting in the wings. Waldhauser and Lozano, the Central Section champion, had met twice before and Lozano had won both times, beating Waldhauser for third place in the national tournament last year and again in the semifinals of the Doc Buchanon tournament. After a scoreless first period, Waldhauser started down and scored first with an escape. He fought off a shot from Lozano and rolled through for a takedown to go up 3-0. He used an arm bar to try to turn him for a near fall but couldn’t. Lozano tried to switch in the third but Waldhauser stepped over to maintain control and win with a shut out. “I feel great on top and unstoppable on my feet right now,” Waldhauser said. “I just tell myself that none of these guys are gods, they’re just human beings like I am and that’s how I go into each match. I just believe I can win.” Rhyan points to Waldhauser’s seventh-place finish last year as a big reason for his success this season. “He works so damn hard and he gutted it out last year to take seventh - that was the turning point for him,” Rhyan said. “The difference now is that he’s working the top now very well and wrestling so much better. He didn’t give up one offensive point all through the postseason and pinned all but two of his opponents.” Waldhauser was so confident after the SVC meet he said, “I don’t think anyone in California can take me down.” No one did. Instead, his gold medal quest was derailed by an ankle. |
