EL DORADO HILLS - The Oak Ridge High wrestling team had a tough start in its first Sierra Valley Conference
dual meet Wednesday, but the Trojans turned it around and dominated the rest of the night to post a 52-24
victory over Christian Brothers.

“We have a young group but as a team we’re looking to improve and continue to get better every week,” Trojan
coach Casey Rhyan said. “Our wrestlers are coming into high school with a lot of experience already so they’re
prepared to compete and wrestle, which is a tremendous advantage for them. Overall we look to be a
formidable group come the postseason, which is most important.”

Oak Ridge’s Paul Davinagrassia opened the evening at 103 pounds and was pinned in the first period. Xavier
Leongson (112)) followed and wrestled a difficult, three-round, six-minute match. In the end, he was unable to
score and went down to defeat 2-0, giving Christian Brothers a 9-0 advantage in the team score.

That was the last time the Falcons would put points on the scoreboard for the next nine matches. Cameron
Miller (119) got the Trojans on the board with a 40-second first-round pin and Zach Marquez (125) did nearly as
well, using a half Nelson to pin his opponent in 44 seconds.

Christian Brothers forfeited the next four matches to Brandon Buriani (130), Derek Shupe (135), Keaton
Subjeck (140) and Josh Dawson (145), putting the Trojans up 36-9.

Once action resumed, the Trojans continued their winning ways as sophomore Hugh Ellerman (152) controlled
his match from the start and used a chicken wing to turn his opponent and earn a second-period pin.

“Tonight went pretty well,” Ellerman said. “I really just go out and wrestle and want to be better than the other
guy. I’m going to work really hard and I think the team and myself will have a good year.”

Alex Diaz (160) was the next Trojan up on the mat. After a scoreless first period, Diaz gave up a two-point take
down, fought to excape but was taken down again to fall behind 4-1. Diaz reversed in the second to narrow the
gap to 4-3 and went on to tie it before giving up another takedown. A late escape was not enough and he fell 6-
5.

Robbie Demaso (171) pinned his man 30 seconds in before Preston Dean (189) gave up a second-period
reversal and was pinned.

The night concluded with a pair of forfeits. Trojan Xavier Lopez (215) had his hand raised in victory before Oak
Ridge forfeited the final heavyweight bout. Share your opinion.
