The top two teams will compete in the team
section tournament at Rosemont Feb. 7.
Ponderosa has clinched first.
The Diamondbacks earned six victories in the
11 contested matches but forfeits cost them as
the Trojans emerged with a 42-26 dual victory.
“We go into our meets knowing that it will be
tough for us to win so we make it our goal to
wrestle well and to win more matches than our
opponents,” D’back coach Tim Brown said.
“Tonight we did that so I am very happy with our
effort.”
Oak Ridge’s Desmond Cooke (171 pounds),
Lukas Wilmore (189) and Mark Coffrini (215)
were awarded forfeits to open the meet, putting
Union Mine in an 18-point hole before action
began.
Trojan Ka’von Tillotson and Dillon Craik (285)
traded takedowns and reversals through three
periods in the first match of the night, before
Tillotson’s takedown in the third period gave him
an 8-6 win.
“That was a hard match for me because I just
really couldn’t get things going,” Tillotson said.
“But in the end I was able to get the takedown
and help the team and that’s what matters.”
Cameron Miller (103) dominated his match with
Tyler Hustrulid, pinning the D’back in the
second period to up Troy’s lead to 27-0. Union
Mine’s Evan Barba (112) broke the string. Quick
on his feet, he used takedowns to build a lead
over Tim Conway for a 10-2 major victory that
put four points up for the D’backs.
Oak Ridge won the next two matches as Joey
Pacific (112) pinned Mike Fowler in the second
period and Greg Barrier (119) earned a slim 5-2
victory over Brenton Wilde. The score was 2-2
in the third when Barrier used an escape and a
takedown to secure the win.
“Barrier and Pacific were two very bright spots
for us in the match tonight,” Oak Ridge assistant
coach Casey Rhyan said. “As a team we did
enough to win and be able to go to team
sections and compete, but overall, those two
really wrestled hard and helped us out.”
Union Mine rallied for the next three decisions.
Cody Mitchell (130) won a 10-2 major decision
over Derek Shupe and Cody Tow (135) followed
with a second-round pin of Cameron Buriani.
Aaron Dekalb’s tough 3-2 victory over Kyle
Sundby (140) narrowed the gap to 36-17.
The teams traded pins in the next two as Trojan
Vince Waldhauser (145) pinned Mitchell Woods
in the second period and D’back Mike
Gachowski (152) turned Ben Lowry to his back
in the first period.
Troy’s Alex Diaz (160) and A.J. Ravetto battled
hard and were tied at four in the third when
Ravetto got a two-point reversal to win the last
match of the night 6-4.
