which will surely remember the day — Wednesday, Dec. 10 — it was
manhandled 71-12 by the Trojans in a Sierra Valley Conference dual meet.
Of 11 bouts scheduled, 10 ended in pins and there was one technical fall. Just one
match, the last, went to a third period. All the fighting points went to the Trojans, who
forfeited twice to account for the Warriors’ 12 points.
“We were okay. We have a lot of work to do because there’s still a lot of mistakes we
have to adjust to — so from a coach’s perspective this early in the season, there are still
a lot of things we have to work on,” Oak Ridge coach Rocco Cardinale said.
Derek Schupe (135 pounds) started things off and turned his opponent with an arm bar
for a first-period pin. Next up, Josh Dawson (140) used an early lift and throw to ring up
four points and then spiraled Galt’s Aric Codog, put in a leg, reached over and hooked
Codog with both arms and sat him back in a “banana split.”
Galt forfeited the 145s to Kyle West to draw a moan from the crowd and left it to Vince
Waldhauser (152) to tilt his way to a second-period 15-0 technical fall over David
Davidson.
With Troy leading 23-0, Kyle Sundby (160) tacked on six more points when he pinned
Adrian Rios just 38 seconds in.
“I came out really excited — probably too excited. I started in a tilt combined with a chin
whip, broke him down, put in a half nelson, turned and pinned him,” Sundby said. “We
have a lot of seniors who all want to be here and make the most of it. Our lineup will be
tough and we want to repeat as league and section champs.”
Nick Rohrer (171) used an ankle pick for two early points before pinning Michael Medina
with 46 seconds left in the first period.
“We had a streak of pins going and I wanted to get another,” said Rohrer, whose
personal goal is to place in the top four in the state. “I did my signature move — a head
lever to a figure four, stuck him, saw the crowd, smiled. End of match.”
Lucas Wilmore (189) followed suit with an arm bar pin in the second period and after
Oak Ridge forfeited at 215s, Ka’von Tilltotson (HWT) threw an overhook and an
underhook, then used a lateral drop to put John Brower to his back 46 seconds after
they started.
At that point Troy led 47-6 and extended the lead as Cameron Miller (103) went
unopposed before Tim Conway (112) used a sprawl and spin behind for two takedown
points that led into a near fall and three more points. Conway used a half nelson to give
Leland McDonald a view of the ceiling and a “barbwire” pin to finish him off.
Oak Ridge didn’t send a wrestler out at 119s, but at 125, Joey Pacific used a duck-
under and a “Saturday night ride,” for his second-period pin. Greg Barrier (130) ended
the evening. He led 11-0 after two periods and was up 13-0 in the third before pinning
Cameron Guerrero with a banana split.
“For the seniors this was out first dual meet in our last year so we wanted to put on a
good showing and pin everyone,” said Pacific, who shares captain duties with West.
“We’ll be better than last year. We’re going to win league, sections and we’d like to take
Masters. We’d also like to get a few state placers — at least four.”
Pacific, along with Dawson, West, Sundby, Rohrer and Tillotson, were the seniors in the
lineup Wednesday for coach Cardinale.
“You can expect to see a team this year that is fun to watch, aggressive and one that’ll
get after it on offense,” Cardinale said. “We hope to compete for the SVC title. I know
Ponderosa will be tough, but we’re hopeful we can give them a battle.”
Oak Ridge has already been to two tournaments. Troy went 4-1 for fifth place at the
Freedom Duals and took five wrestlers to the Walsh Jesuit Ironman Tournament in Ohio.
“That was great experience to see the different styles and strengths. Ohio and
Pennsylvania have some solid wrestlers and that tournament was the toughest I’ve ever
attended,” Cardinale said.
Oak Ridge is competing in the Natomas High Nighthawk Duals tomorrow.
