Oak Ridge High’s wrestling team had a good week with a win over Galt and four wins at the Nighthawk Duals, but lost to Del Oro in the championship match, 40-30. The good news is that the loss came in December and not during the dual meet championships in February, where the teams could meet again. “It could have gone either way,” Oak Ridge coach Rocco Cardinale said. “There were a few very tight matches that would have been a big point swing if they went our way.” There were three matches that Cardinale pointed to as swing matches. Josh Dawson dropped a 6-5 decision at 140 pounds; Vince Waldhauser fell 7-3 at 152 and Lukas Wilmore lost 8-7 at 189 pounds. If Oak Ridge wins a few of those matches, either by decision or with some bonus points, the Trojans win the match. “It all depends on what happens with us and Ponderosa in league and how Del Oro does, but there’s a strong possibility that we could meet them again down the road,” Cardinale said. “We would look forward to that. It would be exciting. Right now it’s only December.” Tim Conway (112), Joey Pacific (119), Kyle West (145) and Nick Rohrer (171) picked up pins against the Eagles, while Oak Ridge also received a forfeit at 103 pounds. Pacific was voted by the coaches as the Outstanding Lightweight Wrestler of the tournament, while West was the Outstanding Middleweight Wrestler of the tournament. Pacific won all five of his matches by pin. The Trojans reached the finals of the tournament after picking up wins over Inderkum, 65-6, Mesa Verde, 55-15, Nevada Union, 60-22 and Douglas High, 49-23. Oak Ridge opened the week with a 71-12 dual meet win over Galt in the first Sierra Valley Conference match of the year. Oak Ridge forfeited 119 and 215 to the Warriors, providing them with their only points of the match. The Trojans won every other match by pin except for Waldhauser’s technical fall at 152 pounds. Conway (112), Joey Pacific (125), Greg Barrier (130), Derek Shupe (135), Dawson (140), Kyle Sundby (160), Nick Rohrer (171), Wilmore (189) and Kavon Tillotson (Hwt.) all won by pin. Oak Ridge travels to Christian Brothers on Wednesday to face the Falcons in a dual meet before competing in the Lou Bronson Invitational at Liberty High in Brentwood on Dec. 22-23. “It’s in the North Coast Section and that will give us a different flavor where we’re not seeing the same guys every week,” Cardinale said. “We haven’t been there in a few years and there are always good wrestlers there.” At the Woodland Junior Varsity Invitational on Saturday, Oak Ridge had six wrestlers win weight classes including Desmond Cook, Brendon Worsley, Hugh Ellerman, Jordan Ubry, Brandon Buriani and Jeremy Carmen. Matt Coffrini, John Muniz, Blake Brown and Alex Artiga all placed second in their respective weight classes, while Cameron Buriani and Jeremy Cruz placed third. |
