Kyle West has accepted a full scholarship to attend UC Davis.

Now that Kyle West has his future plans set, he can concentrate fully on wrestling.

The Oak Ridge senior wrestling star recently accepted a full-scholarship offer from UC
Davis, putting to bed the stressful recruiting process just before his senior season gets
under way.

“It was a lot of stress and it made everything else in my life seem stressful too,” West
said. “I couldn’t imagine having coaches calling me during the season, so that’s why I
had to make an early decision.”

With a 114-14 record and a pair of top-4 finishes at the state wrestling tournament,
among other accomplishments, West was sought after by more than 30 Division I
colleges, not to mention smaller schools.

After visits to Cal Poly, Northwestern and Nebraska, West went on a visit to UC Davis
and was sold.

“They’ve got a great recruiting class and I love the coaching staff,” West said. “I feel
like I fit there, plus it’s a great school. Their wrestling team is on the rise and I’m very
excited for that too.”

Originally, West said he didn’t necessarily want to wrestle close to home, but said he
felt that UC Davis is far enough away, yet close enough to come home whenever he
wanted.

West is excited for his senior season to begin. His first big tournament is the Iron Man
Tournament in Akron, Ohio, which is recognized as one of the toughest tournaments in
the country.

“I’m ready for the season to start,” West said. “We have a solid team and we’re going
to do great things.”
